Tathra, Queen of Dragons Brooch

The Dragon’s head is based around the Norse Heggen vane, from the 11th century CE. It is of the late Ringerike style and is carved as a 3D zoomorphic with enameled eyes. The body was inspired by a beast from the borders on a page from a Bible, in the Advocates Library, Edinburgh which dates from the 13th century CE.

The making of the first piece, or what is call a “master”, took me 170+ hours of work to produce and 12+hours for each replica. The ivy leaves are not flat, instead are moved up and down for a realistic effect. The design was inspired by the historic Bible manuscript, but I have heavily changed the design, particularly the wings and claws.

We can do colour in the leaves upon request, but currently we just do colour in the eyes: blue, green, or red.
