St Matthew Spiral Earrings
This design is from the portrait of Saint Mattew, found in Folio 28V, Saint Matthew’s Gospels in the Book of Kells, 8th century CE Ireland/Iona.
I have adopted this design from a complex spiral located in the lower left hand corner of the folio page 28V. Having first seen the design as an example of Kells spiral work in George Bain’s book on Celtic Art, I searched for the original art work and as I drew it out, I noticed a beautiful yet simple foundation pattern. When worn the Sun shines through these enameled pieces and casts a soft and beautiful coloured light on the neck.
